Work–life balance and gig work: ‘Where are we now’ and ‘where to next’ with the work–life balance agenda?

The article asks ‘where are we’ in the study of work–life balance within Industrial Relations and to next’ if we identify levers for positive change workplace gender equality as technology brings potential smoothing or disrupting how women men from different class groups work care. It first shines a classed lens on mainstream agenda pinpoint limitations its heavy focus time squeezes reported by financially secure middle-class workers neglect money matters. Then, via an enhanced conceptualisation, considers ramifications growth gig balance. Gig is promoted offering flexibility autonomy, enabling carers care, but it performed without safety nets that more common formal employment. can bring unpredictability both work-time income, intensification financial hardship all impact ‘Where developing inclusive approach recognises gender, other types diversity order lever all.
